Welcome to Lynchburg's "In-Town" Country Club
Established in 1914, Oakwood has a rich tradition in Lynchburg. While we are proud of our roots, we constantly strive to improve the services we offer to our members. Oakwood's Rivermont Avenue location serves as an anchor to the prestigious Rivermont/Boonsboro residential district. With our close proximity to Downtown Lynchburg, we are conveniently located for the professional who wants to impress a valued client or squeeze in a swim or game of tennis over lunch. And we are always a convenient retreat for families and friends to gather. |

Our Club Development Goals
Oakwood Country Club has determinded that the operation of a golf course may no longer be viable and has opted to explore other opportunities to maximize the utilization of the property formerly dedicated solely to golf. After considerable thought the club has concluded that a redevelopment of the golf property exclusively or predominantly residential in nature may best accomplish the club's goals, which are:
- Work in harmony with community interests to create a residential community compatible with the surrounding neighborhoods and with the club as its focus.
- Create a residential community of individuals who may be expected to be members of the club.
- Generate sufficient capital from the development to assure Oakwood's finiancial future under a new master plan.
Overview of Progress
The Oakwood site is a +/- 76 acre tract of land in the heart of Lynchburg's respected historic residential neighborhood of Peakland/Boonsboro. A +/- 65 acre portion of the site was formerly used as a golf course. Oakwood plans to retain its existing clubhouse facilities and the immediate 12 acres surrounding the facilities for ongoing club operations and completed a "Request for Proposal" process to solicit proposals for the purchase and development of the +/- 65 acre golf course tract.
The RFP process resulted in numerous proposals being received. A list of finalist was identified and additional discussions with those developers resulted in the signing of a 90 day exclusivity agreement with Celebration Associates in early 2009. During the exclusivity period, Oakwood and the developer held several member and public meetings to learn more about ideas for development. At the end of the agreement, Oakwood and Celebration Associates were unable to arrive at mutually beneficial finiancial terms and the decision was made not to proceed with a joint venture.
Oakwood then contacted another finalist in the RFP process, to determine thier level of interest in the property. Productive discussions ensued which resulted in a 30 day exclusivity agreement being signed in May, 2009. The name of the developer is currently being kept confidential until a more formal agreement can be finalized. The developer has been able to suggest ways to make the project viable through innovative master planning. The club and developer are continuing to explore ways to resolve outstanding issues in order to ensure the long term success of the club. Negotiations with all concerned parties are actively being pursued with the goal of reaching an agreement in the near future. |
